New Prospect Methodist Campground has been shinning the light of GOD in Northwest Jackson County Mississippi since 1880 when a group of GOD fearing Christian men purchased 40 acres from John Orrell. Mr. Orell in return generously donated the money back to the campground. Since 1880 New Prospect has held campmeeting every year except four, 1896 – 1898 due to the economic depression and in 1918 because of the influenza epidemic. New Prospect has endured four major fires, 1902, 1907, 1949 and 1988. With the generosity and helping hands of other tenters and the grace of GOD the buildings were rebuilt, better than before. Over the years, numerous hurricanes have destroyed parts of New Prospect but each time rebuilding occurred and the campground has survived. None of these storms were more devastating than Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Making land fall just six weeks before the start of campmeeting the thought of having to cancel campmeeting crossed everyone’s mind, but once again GOD blessed the campground. With prayers and the helping hands of many from all across the United States campmeeting went off without a hitch. The lives that have been touched through campmeetings, prayer meetings, Easter Sunrise services and Vacation Bible Schools are immeasurable. From generations past and for generations to come this special place is truly “HOLY GROUND”.
