Welcome To New Prospect
Methodist Campground
1880-2024
Campmeetings had a large place in the religious life of Jackson County before New Prospect was established. In mid-summer of 1880, the following brethren met to consider the establishment of a campmeeting. A site was selected. The Selection was made by Aunt Martha Byrd, and the following gentlemen: John A. Flurry, John Rouse, David Dubose, Lewis Havens, George Byrd, Enoch Ramsay, Jeff Lott, William Devareaux, Rev. J. H. Havens, Rev. Ervin Roberts, Rev. W. W. Broom, Rev. G. E. Ellis, Honorable Henry C. Havens. The first sermon was preached by Rev. Inman W. Cooper. The Presiding Elder was Rev. Thomas S. West. The first public tent was operated by Lewis Havens. Descendants of these individuals are still tent holders at New Prospect to this day.
